Fear Is Not An Option - Gary Vaynerchuk | Lab172

"I sometimes secretly hope that my companies go out of business to zero,
I lose everything and all of you write things on social media that I actually suck and was full of shit!"

Everyone of my favorite rappers are what I like to think, natural born hustlers, from Jeezy, Jay Z and the late Nipsey Hussle. I started listening to Jay Z heavily back when I was starting this blog while working at the insurance company that I am also currently a licensed life agent for. I went back to Reasonable Doubt, his first album and worked my way thru his older music within his catalog. I did this in an effort to capture the essence of his hustle which was around that time he was making that pivotal transition to what he has become today or what I like to call “the come up.”

I did the same thing with Nipsey Hussle’s catalog right around the time he was doing his deal with Vezt, a digital marketplace for artists and songwriters to share a percentage of a song’s royalties to fans and brands for royalty-based financing through an Initial Song Offering® (ISO™).At that time, I was about a year into investing on equity crowdfunding platforms and I was looking for other alternative ways of investing small amounts of money. I found out about Vezt and after going through some of the videos on YouTube about the platform, I stumbled upon an interview with Nipsey, which he referenced the platform and his partnership with them.

With Jeezy, it was different in that I’ve been following Jeezy’s career from right around the Streetz iz Watchin mixtape. At that point, he had already dropped his second independent album “Come Shop With Me,” a 2 disk album that features tracks such as 22’s or Better, Rainy Days, Thug Ya and more.

One thing I can say is that I love a good story of someone rising from the bottom to the top but what is most interesting to me within those stories is that transitioning point where someone’s grind and everyday hustle scales and comes out of the mud and becomes a life of it own. When you look at people’s and companies success at that cusp within their journey, you tend to look at the details of what they were doing and how they were doing it and start to realize that it was their consistency that got them to the point their at today. They realized their why, and used that as a source of motivation to keep going.

I can name other artists, entertainers and entrepreneurs and companies that I was able to witness their starting stage, the growth stage and their established stage. But I named the 3 rappers specifically because not only do I admire their career, but I can name specific points in my life where their music and business acumen inspired much of the content I produce, the investments I’ve made and some of the businesses I’ve started. Basically, you can say that their are a partial source of my motivation throughout the everyday grind being that I am still working through the mud!

Two of those rappers have also sat down with one of my favorite entrepreneurs during a filmed, one on one where in both videos, the conversations centered mainly around building brands and acquiring other businesses. Both equally packed with tons of great information, however one of them now plays as what can be called, the soundtrack to an entrepreneurs everyday life.

Recently on Friday, Jeezy released the highly anticipated TM104:The Legend of Snowman

And to get straight to the point, guess who's dropping jewels on the intro of the album. If you don’t know by now, it’s the one and only Gary Vee, and it couldn’t have been anymore perfect. You got Jeezy talking in his trapstar bag and you got Gary talking in his typical business bag! The track which is the intro, is perfectly titled “enTRAPreneur” and from 0:01 to 0:22, Gary starts on top of an uplifting, violin laced melody, shedding his opinions of losing and fear—

“Fear is not an option
I prefer to lose
I sometimes secretly hope that my companies go out of business to zero
I lose everything and all of you write things on social media that I actually suck and was full of shit
And then in the dirt, with a fuckin'— the pain
I'ma rise like a fuckin' phoenix and kill all you motherfuckers
I mean it, yeah"

—GaryVee

Jeezy then starts rapping, giving us a glimpse into his world coming up as a young man before the success. Around the 2:18 mark, Gary comes back in to end the track giving his thoughts on what he thinks of Jeezy—

“I think you should buy Wheaties
Right
For, like, like— I'm being serious
F'real, f'real
Like, that's what I think you can do
I think a lot of kids are gonna make money
You're an entrepreneur
Like, when I look at you, I look at you f—
I look at you "Entrepreneur, comma, artist
Right”

—GaryVee

The two and a half minute intro, which is an exert from an episode of the #AskGaryVee Show, shines a light on Gary’s conversation with Jeezy at VaynerMedia’s headquarters and more importantly, the mindset that every entrepreneur and those aspiring to be, should have. That is to keep going no matter the circumstances, which I think is the true essence of the word Perseverance.
Fear is not an Option

The first words spoken by Gary on the intro, speaks volumes and that quote alone, can help you persevere through the everyday grind. However, I am aware that keeping one’s self going is a difficult thing to do and I can personally attest to that.

There are a million distractions that occur every day which can distract us from staying on track with what we should really be doing. Self-motivation is something that does not come easy to many of us and that means that there are some steps that need to be taken before you can become motivated to the fullest extent. Of course there are some other matters that first need to be taken care of. If there are a lot of distractions that keep you from doing what you need to be doing then you need to make some changes. This is really the first step towards becoming self-motivated in any form.

When you have it set in you mind, wake up everyday and live, eat and breathe by the statement of “Failure is not an Option”, it means that there is no outside force or person pushing you to become what you want. The whole concept of succeeding lies within yourself and that means that you will need to make the effort yourself to be who you want to be. The doing away with the distractions means that you need to be completely self-reliant and if you have many distractions, then you will not be getting the things done, wasting time. I think Gary is trying to explain the things that he is personally doing which is taking the effort to make sure that you are completely absorbed in what you are doing, especially when it comes to dreams, goals, work, etc.. This will mean that everything else takes a back seat and you are working to the best of your ability.

To be self-motivated is to be the one person that gets things done and while things can get difficult at times, understanding your purpose and the want to better yourself can help you get to a point where failure is not an option, more of an obstacle you need to go through to get to where you want to be.

Curated Quotes | Where You Invest Your Time Is Where Your Going To Shine by Gendon Cameron

"Where You Invest Your Time Is Where Your Going To Shine"

Over the last few years, I've had the pleasure of listening to some of the best entrepreneurs, some that do business offline and some that do business online. One guy in particular that I've mentioned many times throughout the blog is Glendon Cameron.

His YouTube channel is filled with content around business topics where he gives great advice, tips and discusses everything from starting your online business, creating eBooks and much more. What is unique about his content is that he also goes into much details about the mindset that is need to start and run a successful business.

The quote "Where You Invest Your Time Is Where Your Going To Shine" originated from a recent video How To Make Money as an Online Consultant, Mentor, Trainer or Teacher. There's a part where Glendon discusses some of the negativity, trolls and haters that he has encountered over the years of doing business online. For anyone who has encountered any form of trolling, negativity or hate knows two things:
  • Negativity, Trolls, and Haters Come and Go When you are doing something usually to better yourself or something along those lines, you are always going to have those who either dislike what you are doing or they want to do what you are doing but they can't so they display their negative feelings upon you.
  • When It's Real, It's Hard To Tear Apart When you are or you've built something real and authentic, it will be very hard for someone to come along and undo what you have built and tear you down. Throughout all the negativity you may receive, something that you put your time and efforts in will be able to withstand any form of negativity and sustain throughout the hardships.
Knowing these two things to be true, Glendon summed it up in a statement when he said,

"Once your talent level is truly earned and you've built it, it is really hard to tear it apart."

This statement is particularly true in many instances and within the video, Glendon gives some examples from his past referencing his growth over the course of 5+ years versus the little to no growth of the people who were trolling and was negative towards him.

The reason that those who have nothing but negativity towards Glendon and others has not grown their business is because while they were focused on trying to bring the next man down, they ended up wasting a lot of their time and brought themselves down. All of the energy and time it will take to create negativity whether it is in the form of videos, articles, trolling, etc, it can dedicated to growing yourself or your business but when it's directed towards negativity, it can really hinder your individual progress and a lot of times, your mindset.

Many variables which can include serendipity, luck, being at the right place at the right time, hard work and most important, talent will lead you to become successful and behind all of those were a single variable that held it all together.

A Positive Mindset

Having a positive mindset can open the doors to many great things to happen in your life whether it is in your business or personal life. The thing is, to have and keep a positive mindset requires lots of effort, patience and time. With that, you will open the doors to endless possibilities that would not be accessible with a negative mindset.

As Glendon stated,

"I invested in becoming better, They invested in becoming worst."

Having a positive mindset IS an investment in your personal development and we all know that Time is a Commodity. Not only that, what one does with their time tells a lot about that person.

So in reality, if your spending majority of your time learning, building, bettering yourself and overall investing in yourself, you will likely have positive outcomes. If you are using your time in a negative way, you will more than likely have negative outcomes.

This is very similar to what Napoleon Hill was explaining about your subconscious mind in Think and Grow Rich. Your subconscious mind draws upon the forces of Infinite Intelligence for the power to transmute one's desire, thoughts, impressions, plans regardless of their nature into its physical equivalent. What this simply means is that what you constantly feed your mind is normally what you will get out of life.

I think it goes without saying that everyone will receive some from of negativity in their life from someone else which is what Martin Lawrence said in his stand up Runteldat

"No one is immune to the trials and tribulations of life."

The key to it all is being able to stay focus on what you are doing and the ability to keep a positive mindset. Being able to weather the storm. Keep learning and keep building. Once you are able to do that, you will see the sunshine at the end.

Curated Quotes | Mind Your Own Business | Robert Kiyosaki

If someone was to come up to you and tell you that you should Mind Your Own Business, many people will immediately get offended. That's because like most of us, when we use that phrase, what we really mean is, "stay out of my personal life and what I have going on". It is not uncommon that we only understand one meaning of the phrase and do not realize that it can also mean something else.

In the book, Rich Dad, Poor Dad chapter four, Mind Your Own Business, starts with a story told by author Robert Kiyosaki about the founder of McDonald's, Ray Kroc. He starts by telling the reader of the conversation Ray Kroc had with a group of students from the University of Texas.

Ray asked the MBA students if they knew what business he was in and thinking he was fooling around, they all laughed jokingly. After repeating the question again, they laughed again, but this time someone yelled out that he was in the "hamburger Business."  He then laughed and stated that he is in the real estate business which he then continued to explain his viewpoint.

What the MBA student did not understand at the time was Ray was not technically the one who was making the burgers but instead Owned the system that created and sold the burgers. More importantly, he owned the land under which every McDonald's is built on allowing him to lease the land to the individual franchise owners and collect rent and royalties.

If you have done any research, you can clearly see that McDonald's has several sources of revenues. Looking at the graph in this article, it shows that while The McDonald's Corporation operates many franchises on their own, the other incomes derives from franchise royalties, rent and other fees from the independent franchise owners.

The Ray Kroc's conversation with the MBA students was used as an example by Robert Kiyosaki in the book, Rich Dad, Poor dad, to point out one main fact:

Our current educational system prepares students for a Profession (a chef, a police, a engineer, etc) which in part means working for someone else instead of giving students a financial education, which can help them build businesses and acquire assets, making yourself rich or financially secure, hence the phrase, Mind your Own Business.

I think it is only right that we acknowledge the fact that not everyone wants or will be rich nor own a business but at the same time, we all can have a better financial future. We all can have financial freedom but we have to become financially educated.

What we all should take away from the quote, Mind Your Own Business, is exactly what we did not learn in school. That is to focus more on your own business, building and maintaining assets in your portfolio and creating new sources of revenue instead of focusing on making someone else rich.

Little Efforts

Curated Quotes | Little Efforts | Inspired by Darren Hardy

The quote above, which I like to call "Little Efforts" was inspired by one of my favorite books in the self improvement/motivational categories. While reading the The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy, I fully understood what he was talking about in the throughout the book.

One thing that I am a firm believer in, is that if you put in the necessary work and I'm not talking about working a 9-5, but if you put in enough work in something you are doing or building (example: starting a business) over a period of time, I believe you will eventually see the success you desire which is the main idea of this quote.

"Little efforts everyday over a long period of time will have a greater effect on your life than large efforts over a short period of time."

Two correlations to this quote that I find very true are building a business and body building. As far as starting a business goes, it is said that on average, it takes about 5 years to build and grow a successful business. While there's many businesses that have had success in less time, what I feel that the statistic means is that the average Joe who decides to go and start a new business with little to no resources is going to find it hard to operate day to day and grow long term.

When purchasing and operating an already popular franchise such as a McDonald's or Wendy's, the infrastructure is practically there already there so the cost that goes into customer and client acquisitions are small if any is need. On the other hand, Joe who starts a new business will have to use the critical first few years in acquiring customers or clients for his business which will be much harder than opening an already popular franchise. Also, depending on the type of business he decides to start, money will have to be spent on marketing, branding and building relationships with suppliers and distributors which can be costly in the first few years being that Joe may not have enough funds available to purchase items in bulk which can be a huge savings factor. But if Joe puts in the necessary work and continues to grow the business over time I small steps, there is a chance that his business can become very successful. Now, while there's many known and unknown factors that can decide if the fate of a business, the average start up company will find this to be true.

When it comes to bodybuilding, most bodybuilders, fitness coaches and even athletes, you would find that these people workout and train just about everyday. When you see them, they are in top shape but if you ask them, they will tell you that it took them sometime to get to the point that they are at. It took literally what the famous quotes says, Blood, Sweat and Tears including long days and nights of constant working out and training

While looking at the quote, one can say that they have tried something for years and it still did not work out for them. Now while I do feel that it is very important to understand what you are getting yourself into before you start doing or building something, somethings ultimately just do not workout. The main point of the quote and the book is showing that putting forth effort into something long term I small steps can lead to something great, but there is also an underlying knowledge that there is a certain discipline which includes your thinking, habits, choices, and momentum that is also needed to succeed.

All of these things affect the outcome of your success or failure but the one thing that stands firm when you look at every successful business or person is that they stayed focus and continued to push through the ups and downs until they got to the point where they currently are.

What are some of the things you have been working on over a long period of time and have you start seeing results? Please feel free to leave your comments below!
