Fear Is Not An Option - Gary Vaynerchuk | Lab172

"I sometimes secretly hope that my companies go out of business to zero,
I lose everything and all of you write things on social media that I actually suck and was full of shit!"

Everyone of my favorite rappers are what I like to think, natural born hustlers, from Jeezy, Jay Z and the late Nipsey Hussle. I started listening to Jay Z heavily back when I was starting this blog while working at the insurance company that I am also currently a licensed life agent for. I went back to Reasonable Doubt, his first album and worked my way thru his older music within his catalog. I did this in an effort to capture the essence of his hustle which was around that time he was making that pivotal transition to what he has become today or what I like to call “the come up.”

I did the same thing with Nipsey Hussle’s catalog right around the time he was doing his deal with Vezt, a digital marketplace for artists and songwriters to share a percentage of a song’s royalties to fans and brands for royalty-based financing through an Initial Song Offering® (ISO™).At that time, I was about a year into investing on equity crowdfunding platforms and I was looking for other alternative ways of investing small amounts of money. I found out about Vezt and after going through some of the videos on YouTube about the platform, I stumbled upon an interview with Nipsey, which he referenced the platform and his partnership with them.

With Jeezy, it was different in that I’ve been following Jeezy’s career from right around the Streetz iz Watchin mixtape. At that point, he had already dropped his second independent album “Come Shop With Me,” a 2 disk album that features tracks such as 22’s or Better, Rainy Days, Thug Ya and more.

One thing I can say is that I love a good story of someone rising from the bottom to the top but what is most interesting to me within those stories is that transitioning point where someone’s grind and everyday hustle scales and comes out of the mud and becomes a life of it own. When you look at people’s and companies success at that cusp within their journey, you tend to look at the details of what they were doing and how they were doing it and start to realize that it was their consistency that got them to the point their at today. They realized their why, and used that as a source of motivation to keep going.

I can name other artists, entertainers and entrepreneurs and companies that I was able to witness their starting stage, the growth stage and their established stage. But I named the 3 rappers specifically because not only do I admire their career, but I can name specific points in my life where their music and business acumen inspired much of the content I produce, the investments I’ve made and some of the businesses I’ve started. Basically, you can say that their are a partial source of my motivation throughout the everyday grind being that I am still working through the mud!

Two of those rappers have also sat down with one of my favorite entrepreneurs during a filmed, one on one where in both videos, the conversations centered mainly around building brands and acquiring other businesses. Both equally packed with tons of great information, however one of them now plays as what can be called, the soundtrack to an entrepreneurs everyday life.

Recently on Friday, Jeezy released the highly anticipated TM104:The Legend of Snowman

And to get straight to the point, guess who's dropping jewels on the intro of the album. If you don’t know by now, it’s the one and only Gary Vee, and it couldn’t have been anymore perfect. You got Jeezy talking in his trapstar bag and you got Gary talking in his typical business bag! The track which is the intro, is perfectly titled “enTRAPreneur” and from 0:01 to 0:22, Gary starts on top of an uplifting, violin laced melody, shedding his opinions of losing and fear—

“Fear is not an option
I prefer to lose
I sometimes secretly hope that my companies go out of business to zero
I lose everything and all of you write things on social media that I actually suck and was full of shit
And then in the dirt, with a fuckin'— the pain
I'ma rise like a fuckin' phoenix and kill all you motherfuckers
I mean it, yeah"

—GaryVee

Jeezy then starts rapping, giving us a glimpse into his world coming up as a young man before the success. Around the 2:18 mark, Gary comes back in to end the track giving his thoughts on what he thinks of Jeezy—

“I think you should buy Wheaties
Right
For, like, like— I'm being serious
F'real, f'real
Like, that's what I think you can do
I think a lot of kids are gonna make money
You're an entrepreneur
Like, when I look at you, I look at you f—
I look at you "Entrepreneur, comma, artist
Right”

—GaryVee

The two and a half minute intro, which is an exert from an episode of the #AskGaryVee Show, shines a light on Gary’s conversation with Jeezy at VaynerMedia’s headquarters and more importantly, the mindset that every entrepreneur and those aspiring to be, should have. That is to keep going no matter the circumstances, which I think is the true essence of the word Perseverance.
Fear is not an Option

The first words spoken by Gary on the intro, speaks volumes and that quote alone, can help you persevere through the everyday grind. However, I am aware that keeping one’s self going is a difficult thing to do and I can personally attest to that.

There are a million distractions that occur every day which can distract us from staying on track with what we should really be doing. Self-motivation is something that does not come easy to many of us and that means that there are some steps that need to be taken before you can become motivated to the fullest extent. Of course there are some other matters that first need to be taken care of. If there are a lot of distractions that keep you from doing what you need to be doing then you need to make some changes. This is really the first step towards becoming self-motivated in any form.

When you have it set in you mind, wake up everyday and live, eat and breathe by the statement of “Failure is not an Option”, it means that there is no outside force or person pushing you to become what you want. The whole concept of succeeding lies within yourself and that means that you will need to make the effort yourself to be who you want to be. The doing away with the distractions means that you need to be completely self-reliant and if you have many distractions, then you will not be getting the things done, wasting time. I think Gary is trying to explain the things that he is personally doing which is taking the effort to make sure that you are completely absorbed in what you are doing, especially when it comes to dreams, goals, work, etc.. This will mean that everything else takes a back seat and you are working to the best of your ability.

To be self-motivated is to be the one person that gets things done and while things can get difficult at times, understanding your purpose and the want to better yourself can help you get to a point where failure is not an option, more of an obstacle you need to go through to get to where you want to be.

Inch By Inch, It's a Cinch - Curated Quotes | Lab172

Thinking about how far you have to go or how much work you have to get done over the weekend can kill your motivation to even get started.
Always remember, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step and to even build up momentum, you must start somewhere.

Inch By Inch, It's A Cinch

The first time I heard this quote, I was listening to the Zo What Morning Show and it was mentioned by Bobby Glanton-Smith, author of the book, Real Men Don't Play.

The quote Inch by Inch, It's a Cinch, stems from a longer quote that says

"Mile by Mile, It's a Trial; Yard By Yard, It's Hard But Inch by Inch, It's a Cinch."

You will sometimes hear different versions worded differently but overall, it all means the same thing. To me, the quote is quite similar to the message behind "Little Efforts" and represents the same basic foundation,

"You will be more productive in what you are doing by tackling smaller tasks one at a time than taking on larger tasks all at once."

I personally have came to fully understand the meaning of what this truly means and have been practicing this for a little while now. Much of what this quote suggests is that you have to take lots of small action to fully accomplish something but many times what restricts us from doing this is a lack of focus and control of your subconscious mind. I will suggest to anyone to read 2 books that was very instrumental in helping me learn to control my subconscious mind.

These two books, in a nutshell, helped me to understand the real power of your subconscious mind and how to use it to focus in on the things you want to acquire in life whether it is mentally, socially, physically, or financially.

Sometimes we get very distracted and frustrated by the amount of time, energy and effort we may have to put into growing something or even getting to a certain point. We tend to look to see the end of something before we attempt to start but start to realize that we are no where near the end or where we want to be and by doing this, we put limits and boundaries in our mind.

Not only that, we will see how far we are from accomplishing something and start to rush through things or even take on multiple tasks at one time to which some will refer to as "Multi-tasking."

Taking on multiple tasks at one time and rushing through them can deplete the time and energy it takes to be fully focused on accomplishing your goal.

If we take a step back and start to set milestones for the problems we are trying to solve or for the goals we are trying to reach, we can can essentially accomplish things quicker.

Setting benchmarks and breaking your goals down into segments will ease the load and brain power consumption so things will be easier to manage and finish.

For the most part, we all want to finish things we set out to do but realistically, most of us never finish what we started. What happens after is that we are met with a great deal of disappointment because of what our minds have constantly told our subconscious minds.

The solution is to focus in on what you want to accomplish and that only. Do not worry about how much work you have to put in or how far you've got to go. The conditions are never perfect. You have to get started.

Start setting benchmarks and milestones for your goals and as you start knocking them out one by one, you will start to realize how much work you have put in that is only bringing you closer and closer to accomplishing your goals.

I would love to hear your thoughts and how this quotes apply to you. Have you ever lost your motivation to finish something because you thought it would be too much work or take too much time? Leave your comments below!

Curated Quotes | Its Always Harder to Build the Machine that Builds the Machine by Elon Musk

Its Always Harder to Build the Machine that Builds the Machine
~ Elon Musk

One of my favorite entrepreneurs and role models in the environmental space is Elon Musk. Elon, founder and CEO of Tesla Motors, Space X and Chairman of Solar City,  is one of those guys that pushes everything to the limit and does what he sets out to do regardless if anyone believes in him or not. He has tackled many of the major issues such as energy production and energy storage, sustainable transportation and other issues in other industries.

In fact, I am currently reading the book "Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future" by Ashlee Vance and will be doing a short article about the book which you will be able to find in the Must Read Books section.

During a 3 hour shareholders meeting, CEO Elon Musk detailed the entire history while also sharing stories of Tesla Motors from beginning production on the Roadster to the present day of building the Model 3 and the Gigafactory. Many of Tesla's first engineers and designers and JB Straubel, CTO of Tesla Motors, also took the stage to share some of their stories and experiences in the early days of Tesla Motors. During his speech, one statement he mentioned a few times caught my attention.

It started when he said,

"Tesla was founded on 2 false premises."

The first being that you can easily modify a gasoline sports car to be electric which turned out to be false and the other is they would be able to use the AC propulsion technology that they licensed for production vehicles.

What ended up happening is years of trial and errors and most importantly, they became an vertical integrated company, meaning that they now manufacture most of the supplies they need to build the electric cars. Not only that, they are manufacturing the tools needed to manufacture the supplies.

While explaining this to the audience, he also stated something that gave birth to this quote. He said,

"The true problem, the true difficulty and where the greatest potential is, is building the machine that builds the machine."

He then continued by explaining that it very important but and always harder to build the machine that builds the machine. When I heard him say this, I could instantly understand what he meant by that statement and I feel just about most entrepreneurs can also relate.

The main thing you can take away from this is really about building a foundation and the hard work that it takes.

Laying down the foundation of anything is always the hardest thing to do because you are starting from the very beginning. Take this blog for example.

Although the basic foundation of this blog is already built (the about page, resource page, etc), I am still building upon the current foundation of the blog, adding more pages and more content.  One of the key process that I would consider the hardest and most time consuming is creating articles that will essentially be the base articles to many other articles to come.

Basically, the pieces of content produced in the future will more than likely include pieces of content that was created now and in the past.

This allows me to continue to build upon what I already have with more content and I can also go back and reference older pieces of content within the new content.

Essentially, your foundation is everything and if it is built strong, you can build or rebuild anything on it and not only that, building your foundation from the ground up can save a lot of time and effort in the long run.

In all, what we can take from this quote is that it is always better to build from the ground up and not only that, it's even better to build the tools you will need to build whatever it is you are building.

This will ensure that you will have a solid and strong foundation to continue to build upon for years to come.

Tell us what you think the meaning of this quote represents.

Here is the video where Elon Musk talks about "Building the Machine that Makes the Machine." (Starts at 1:02:36)

Curated Quotes | Where You Invest Your Time Is Where Your Going To Shine by Gendon Cameron

"Where You Invest Your Time Is Where Your Going To Shine"

Over the last few years, I've had the pleasure of listening to some of the best entrepreneurs, some that do business offline and some that do business online. One guy in particular that I've mentioned many times throughout the blog is Glendon Cameron.

His YouTube channel is filled with content around business topics where he gives great advice, tips and discusses everything from starting your online business, creating eBooks and much more. What is unique about his content is that he also goes into much details about the mindset that is need to start and run a successful business.

The quote "Where You Invest Your Time Is Where Your Going To Shine" originated from a recent video How To Make Money as an Online Consultant, Mentor, Trainer or Teacher. There's a part where Glendon discusses some of the negativity, trolls and haters that he has encountered over the years of doing business online. For anyone who has encountered any form of trolling, negativity or hate knows two things:
  • Negativity, Trolls, and Haters Come and Go When you are doing something usually to better yourself or something along those lines, you are always going to have those who either dislike what you are doing or they want to do what you are doing but they can't so they display their negative feelings upon you.
  • When It's Real, It's Hard To Tear Apart When you are or you've built something real and authentic, it will be very hard for someone to come along and undo what you have built and tear you down. Throughout all the negativity you may receive, something that you put your time and efforts in will be able to withstand any form of negativity and sustain throughout the hardships.
Knowing these two things to be true, Glendon summed it up in a statement when he said,

"Once your talent level is truly earned and you've built it, it is really hard to tear it apart."

This statement is particularly true in many instances and within the video, Glendon gives some examples from his past referencing his growth over the course of 5+ years versus the little to no growth of the people who were trolling and was negative towards him.

The reason that those who have nothing but negativity towards Glendon and others has not grown their business is because while they were focused on trying to bring the next man down, they ended up wasting a lot of their time and brought themselves down. All of the energy and time it will take to create negativity whether it is in the form of videos, articles, trolling, etc, it can dedicated to growing yourself or your business but when it's directed towards negativity, it can really hinder your individual progress and a lot of times, your mindset.

Many variables which can include serendipity, luck, being at the right place at the right time, hard work and most important, talent will lead you to become successful and behind all of those were a single variable that held it all together.

Personaldevelopment728x90

A Positive Mindset

Having a positive mindset can open the doors to many great things to happen in your life whether it is in your business or personal life. The thing is, to have and keep a positive mindset requires lots of effort, patience and time. With that, you will open the doors to endless possibilities that would not be accessible with a negative mindset.

As Glendon stated,

"I invested in becoming better, They invested in becoming worst."

Having a positive mindset IS an investment in your personal development and we all know that Time is a Commodity. Not only that, what one does with their time tells a lot about that person.

So in reality, if your spending majority of your time learning, building, bettering yourself and overall investing in yourself, you will likely have positive outcomes. If you are using your time in a negative way, you will more than likely have negative outcomes.

This is very similar to what Napoleon Hill was explaining about your subconscious mind in Think and Grow Rich. Your subconscious mind draws upon the forces of Infinite Intelligence for the power to transmute one's desire, thoughts, impressions, plans regardless of their nature into its physical equivalent. What this simply means is that what you constantly feed your mind is normally what you will get out of life.

I think it goes without saying that everyone will receive some from of negativity in their life from someone else which is what Martin Lawrence said in his stand up Runteldat

"No one is immune to the trials and tribulations of life."

The key to it all is being able to stay focus on what you are doing and the ability to keep a positive mindset. Being able to weather the storm. Keep learning and keep building. Once you are able to do that, you will see the sunshine at the end.

Curated Quotes | Setting Goals Is Like Having Sex | Dr. Boyce Watkins

In the beginning of 2015, I started to follow many online and offline entrepreneurs, community leaders, etc that I mention quite often in this blog but one that I've never mentioned before, his name is Dr. Boyce Watkins.

I first learned about Dr. Watkins while he was doing an interview on the radio show Power 105.1 The Breakfast Club and since then I've started to tune into his YouTube page to listen to his messages and speeches. What was so great about the show was that he came onto the show right after Dame Dash's famous interview on the same radio show which quite frankly, left me motivated enough to take over the world.

Those interviews came right around the time I left my job to start and run my business so it was very inspiring and motivating to see other people talking about the same things I was setting out to do. Nonetheless, over the course of starting and running a few online businesses and a service company, I've learned a few things, one being what Dr. Watkins stated in the perfect analogy.

In a video which gave birth to this quote, "Setting Goals Is Like Having Sex" Dr. Watkins explained how your goals, ideas and dreams and even starting a business is much like having sex and raising a child which I personally feel he is quite accurate.

As stated by Dr. Watkins, essentially the idea behind the quote is based on consistency, which is a major part of setting and achieving your goals and even when you are building a business. If you have ever heard the phrase, "Starting and running a business is much like having a child?" Well both quotes are quite similar and accurate in that it takes a lot of work to raise a child as well as to grow your business.

Taking a deeper look into the quote, you may also find other similar traits related to having a baby and starting a business.

To summarize what Dr. Watkins is explaining in video, lets take a look at the two scenarios.

Build a Successful Business from Idea to Reality

and

Being a Parent from Having Sex to Raising a Child to Adulthood

It all starts out with an Idea and a Decision

Many times when you ask entrepreneurs about their earlier attempts at starting businesses, your going to hear stories of all the different ideas for a business that were never attempted, failed or simply nothing was produced from all of the energy invested. Even with people who aspire to do other things than business, they probably have had tons of ideas to do something that in the end, never turned into anything.

In comparison to sex, to simply put it many people have sex all the time but it doesn't mean a child will be conceived or born just because two people are having sex.

You've Built Up Your Idea and Your Egg Being Fertilized

On the other hand, an egg being fertilized is equivalent to having that 1 idea out of the bunch on its way to becoming something real.

If you look at the birth process, when the millions of sperm is released by the male, only one makes it through to fertilize the egg. It is usually the same with your goals, dreams and ideas. People have thousands of ideas that are never executed on but most of time, 1 out of every 100 ideas makes it to fruition.

After all of the ideas you gone through and attempted, you finally got one that looks promising because you took the steps and the time to build something of value.

The Embryo and Your Idea Developing

During pregnancy, especially at the beginning you will begin to feel changes to your body and you will also have to start making changes in your lifestyle because you know you are carrying a baby. Whether or not you are showing signs of pregnancy and if anyone can tell if you are pregnant or not, at the end of the day you know that you are pregnant and within time, a baby will be here.

As Dr. Watkins was saying, it is very similar during the development process of your idea. You can constantly work on that one idea because you know that it is going to turn into something but others may not see it that way. Your idea may not be producing as much money as you would like, but you can definitely see that it is gaining some traction and growing slowly in its own way. Around these times when you are building is when people may doubt what you are doing and may even try to persuade you to give up because they don't see what you see in the business.

This is particularly true among many entrepreneurs and if you ask them, many will say that they had little to no support from family and friends in the early days of building their businesses.

The baby being born is similar to your business becoming a reality and starting to make some money

When a baby is born, your baby is small and fragile so you have to be very gentle and pay close attention to his or her needs. As with your business, you have to do the same which is to pay close attention to the needs of your business as it is still fragile and new. Your ideas, goals or business usually becomes real when you start to make enough money that you can now start to pay yourself a little or hire employees. This may vary from person to person as everyone has different financial goals but for the most part, around this time is when you have to be extra careful with your business.

It is not the time to slow down or stop for a few weeks because your business can fail just as quickly as it started and with your baby, you are not going to let your baby starve are you? No. You know that your baby has to eat every few hours, diapers needs to be changed and so on.

From Infancy to Adulthood

As Dr. Watkins stated, "Raising a child from infancy to adulthood takes thousands and thousands of hours of very consistent, deliberate effort." What he means is that regardless of how you may feel, you will always be a parent and most of the time, there is no turning off. At the same time, you will always have to feed the child, teach, nurture and guide the child as he or she is growing and maturing into adulthood.

The same can be said from the perspective of running a business. It takes a lot of time and effort to not only start a business, but to grow the business as well. Running a business is practically an 24-7 around the clock job that requires much attention. From contracts, accounting, employees, payroll, meetings, inventory, new business, marketing, etc and the list goes on and on.

Unless you have employees in place to handle these things, your input and guidance will always be required in just about every aspect of your business. As your business grows, you have to continue guiding, nurturing and feeding the business with new ideas, more employees, more inventory, etc. So at the end of the day, just like you will be in parent mode all of the time when you have a child, you will be in business mode all of the time when you start and run a business.

As time goes on and you take a look back after all of the effort, time and attention you've given, your child has gone from a little baby to a full grown adult at which point they can take care of themselves.

With your business its the same. After time goes by and you've put in the work, your business grows into a mature company and if you've organized it correctly, your business can metaphorically run on its own

Being a Dad and a Entrepreneur, I can relate to what he is saying in the video because ultimately like Dr. Watkins has stated, "Your dreams, ideas and goals, people have them everyday" but it doesn't mean that your idea will turn into something and just like sex, people do it (pun intended) everyday but that doesn't mean a child will be conceived and born out of that union.

Until you have that 1 idea that you've put in the hard work, time and effort to build, then your idea will be just that, an idea. Even once you've built the business, until it is born or start to make money and employ people, then it becomes more real.

As I've mentioned earlier, Dr. Watkins was simply using the analogy to show you how much work it takes to start and run a business or to achieve your dreams and goals. To summarize the different parts of the analogy, one can say that

"Starting a business is like having sex and running a business is like raising a child."
